Dear Reader,
Greetings and
welcome to the
inaugural issue
of 'THE PROTECTOR,”
a bimonthly magazine
we are bringing
out for the Mumbai
Police. You are
aware that maintaining
law and order
in Mumbai, India's
commercial capital
and industrial
hub, can be the
most challenging
task for the police
authorities. No
wonder, the Mumbai
Police force,
the custodian
of law and order
in this throbbing
city of more than
15 million people,
is perennially
on high alert.
Professional to
the core, quick
in response and
fast in action,
the Mumbai Police
displayed exemplary
courage in the
face of grave
danger while capturing
a heavily armed
terrorist alive
on the night of
26 November 2008.
The main story
of the magazine
tells how the
Mumbai Police
braved it all
and the sacrifices
its men had made
in terms of the
lives lost. We
pay a tribute
to the 16 men
from the Mumbai
Police who became
martyrs on that
black night while
fighting the armed
Pakistani terrorist
fidayin who were
on a suicide mission.
One of the most
important changes
the Maharashtra
Government has
effected in the
wake of the terrorist
attack on Mumbai
has been the appointment
of D. Sivanandhan
as the City's
Commissioner of
Police. A tough
taskmaster, who
shot into fame
for smashing the
notorious organized
underworld crime
syndicates of
the city during
his earlier tenure
as Joint Commissioner
of Police (Crime),
Sivanandhan lost
no time in initiating
measures for instilling
confidence among
the citizens and
motivating the
police force.
We carry a profile
and an interview
of the Top Cop,
who says his men
are being trained,
equipped and prepared
to meet any terrorist
threat. As mentioned
earlier, the Mumbai
Police had shown
exemplary courage
during the dark
night of terror
on 26 November
2008. And the
cop who personifies
that courage is
Additional Police
Commissioner Sadanand
Date, who stood
his ground in
the face of grenade
attacks from two
terrorists at
Cama Albless Hospital.
We carry an interview
of Date, who describe
that night as
the most challenging.
the Mumbai Police,
as part of their
campaign to create
awareness among
the people about
the looming threat
of terrorism,
have launched
many initiatives.
We carry an interview
with Additional
Police Commissioner
Vinay Kargaonkar,
who explains how
the citizens are
put on a perpetual
mode of alert.
The focus of the
magazine is on
the bravery of
the Mumbai Police
and the ongoing
trial of Azmal
Amir Kasab, the
Pakistani terrorist
caught alive.
We pay a tribute
to the 16 brave
men who sacrificed
their lives. In
terms of themes,
Bollywood has
borrowed extensively
from the Mumbai
Police, which
has over the years
evolved itself
into an icon and
brand. In Down
Memory Lane, noted
film journalist
Uday Tarra Nayar
recalls how Bollywood
portrayed in 'reel
life' Mumbai Police
officers from
Iftekar Khan to
Amitabh Bachchan
to Akshay Kumar.
The living legend
Dilip Kumar tells
why he likes the
title of the magazine
“THE PROTECTOR”,
taking you back
to his childhood.
The magazine carries
a unique photo
feature on the
150 years of police
history. This
includes a write-up
on the Bombay
Police and the
freedom movement,
and how they arrested
Mahatma Gandhi
and other great
leaders such as
Jawaharlal Nehru
and Vallabhai
Patel. Kiran Bedi
has scored many
firsts in her
distinguished
career. India's
first woman IPS
officer, Bedi
rose to be the
Police Advisor
to the United
Nations. A prison
reformer, she
has won many prestigious
awards, including
the Magsaysay
Award. We carry
a write-up on
this remarkable
achiever. There
is a feature on
cyber crime, which
is fast spreading,
thanks to the
power of the Internet
and its easy access
to educated criminals.
In the wellness
section, we carry
a feature on building
a winning mind,
which is very
essential for
law enforcement
personnel. Then,
there is a case
study, which tells
how technology
has helped in
preventing recurrence
of crime among
young offenders.
In the news section,
we carry a report
on the 8th anniversary
of the 9/11 terrorist
attack on the
World Trade twin
towers in New
York. Also included
is a report on
an emergency drill
that took place
in New York recently.
In this context,
we also carry
an important report
on the economy
of terrorism,
the cost involved
in carrying out
operations and
the deadly returns
on that investment.
A write-up from
the Bank of Maharashtra
enlightens you
on the issue of
terror financing.
We carry a report
on IFSEC India,
an upcoming global
event on security,
scheduled to be
held in New Delhi
from 29 to 31
October, 2009.
We trust the maiden
issue of THE
PROTECTOR
enlightens you
as much as it
helps you connect
with the cops.
