Dear
Reader,
Greetings. The spectre of global
warming is knocking at the door.
A recent report of the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change - 'Climate
Change 2007: Impacts, Adaptation
and Vulnerability' - predicts
that up to 250 million people
across the world will experience
problems in accessing sufficient
water by 2020 because of climate
change. Agricultural production
could be halved in certain instances
during the same period. Other
possible ill-effects include rising
sea levels towards the end of
the century that will take a toll
of densely populated coastal areas.
If we fail to take necessary steps,
millions of lives will be wiped
out before the end of the century.
The central theme for setting
stage for any discussions on Climate
Change is to sensitize key policy
makers and the public about the
causes leading to global warming.
It provides a stage for domestic
and international communities
in developing practical and effective
solutions to this important environmental
challenge. To meet this challenge
we must fundamentally promote
risk reduction efforts and other
remedial or mitigation measures
amongst all stakeholders. This
issue intends to share & disseminate
information on different impacts
of disaster on society particularly
on the under privileged class
of the world. In “a terrible
indictment of the world in 2007”
the UN said 18,000 children die
every day of hunger and malnutrition
and 85 million go to bed every
night with empty stomach. Thus,
there is an urgent need to evolve
a holistic approach towards addressing
global warming and poverty in
co-relation. The developed and
developing nations must interact
on a common platform and uncap
potential resources to eradicate
poverty. DMM (Disaster Risk Mitigation
And Management), a magazine, which
is committed to the promotion
of public-private partnership
(PPP) as well as the concept of
Corporate- Community Interface
(CCI) welcomes the forthcoming
International Conference on Disaster
Reduction (ICDR) 2007, being held
in Mumbai for the third successive
year. The theme of ICDR 2007 -Business
Continuity Management (BCM) and
Disaster Recovery will provide
a further opportunity for the
distinguished delegates from across
the world to discuss and debate
various issues involved and draw
a roadmap for future action. DMM
heartily welcomes the delegates
from across 20 countries to the
conference and wishes ICDR 2007
a grand success.
Wish you happy reading,
